Every summer the State of California Department of Parks and Recreation runs an excellent Junior Lifeguard program. Demand is high for the spaces available. Please review the parent brochure.

Who: Boys and Girls - 8-16 years old

Where: Dunes State Beaches, in Half Moon Bay

Why: Become Ocean safe, learn about the local environment and have fun. The Junior Lifeguard program is a unique and challenging aquatic program for young people, in which the promotion of water safety and environmental awareness are the primary goals.

When: All programs run Monday through Friday - 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

*If you are a new Junior Lifeguard participant (i.e. have never participated in a State Junior Lifeguard Program) you are REQUIRED to attend a tryout.

Program Locations and Dates:

Session I - June 16 to July 11, 2008*
Session II - July 21 to August 15, 2008 (This session will only be held if we have sufficient interest in both sessions by June 15th)

*Junior Lifeguards will not be held on Friday July 4, 2008

Program Fees*:

Costs for all programs $400.00, $360.00 for each additional child in family or for 2nd session if doing both programs.

*Fees subject to change.

Payment: The Half Moon Bay State Junior Lifeguard Program accepts Personal Checks, Cashier Checks or Money Orders. No other forms of payment will be accepted.
Tuition assistance may be available, please inquire with the Junior Lifeguard Coordinator.

Tryout Information:

If you are a new Junior Lifeguard participant (i.e. have never participated in a State Junior Lifeguard Program you are REQUIRED to attend a tryout. Tryouts are non competitive and are used to ensure a minimum ability in the water.

Each new participant is required to demonstrate:

1. A continuous 100 yard swim
2. Treading water 2-3 minutes
3. A 10 yard under water swim

* 8 year olds are only required to swim 50 yards.

New Participant Tryout Dates:

Saturday, May 17, 2008 -- 9:00am - 12:00 noon
Saturday, June 7, 2008 -- 9:00am - 12:00 noon
Saturday, July 12, 2008 -- 9:00am - 12:00 noon
NOTE: Classes fill up on a first come first serve basis.

Tryout Location:

All Tryouts will be held at the Half Moon Bay High School Pool. Half Moon Bay High School is located at the Northern end of Lewis Foster Dr. and does not have a street address.

Youth Aide Program

If your Junior Guard is between the ages of 15-18 they should consider trying out to become a Junior Lifeguard Youth Aide. As a Youth Aide you work under the close supervision of the Junior Lifeguard Supervisor. This Uniformed position will work directly with the Lifeguard Staff in order to develop job skills; quality work habits and leadership qualities through work experience.
