Santa Cruz State Lifeguard Association

This year has been filled with challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s impacts nationwide. The Sandman Triathlon and Duathlon exists to provide a fun, safe and memorable community experience for our racers and volunteers and to raise funds for Junior Guards programs. Unfortunately, we have come to the heartbreaking conclusion that it will be infeasible to conduct the race this year and have decided to cancel the Sandman Triathlon and Duathlon scheduled for Sunday, August 23, 2020. We have made this tough decision in recognition that public safety and health is our highest priority and based on our understanding of the foreseeable State and local timelines and conditions for conducting mass participation events. We look forward to seeing you in 2021! Racers currently registered for this year will be automatically rolled over to next year. USAT one-day memberships will roll over to next year’s race intact. We want to thank you in advance for your support. If you have any further questions please contact the race director at

The Sandman Triathlon

Sunday, August 22, 2021

The goal of the Santa Cruz State Lifeguard Association is to promote water safety, education, and improve professional lifeguard standards and morale as it pertains to its execution in the California State Parks.

The Sandman Triathlon is one of Santa Cruz County's longest-running triathlons. The inaugural race was way back in 1986, during the infancy of the sport.

The Junior Lifeguard Program emphasizes: Teamwork, Leadership, and Aquatic Safety while introducing young people to aquatic recreational and professional opportunities.
