Sandman Triathlon

.75 mi SWIM, 13 mi BIKE, 4 mi RUN

The Sandman Triathlon is one of Santa Cruz County’s oldest triathlons, having its inaugural race way back in 1985 in the infancy days of the sport. The Sandman is a fundraiser for the local State Parks, Lifeguard operations and the Junior Lifeguard program. Proceeds help fund scholarships for underprivileged kids so they can receive high quality water safety education. The Sandman Triathlon is a USAT sanctioned event.

Event details and schedule


The race will be held on Sunday, August 27, 2023 at Seacliff State Beach. Race begins at 8am.

Racers start with a brisk .75 swim around the historic S.S. Palo Alto Cement Ship, followed by a 13 mile bike through the rolling hills of Aptos, finishing with a scenic 4 mile beach run to New Brighton Beach and back. All proceeds benefit the Junior Guards, Lifeguard and State Park operations. 

 

Packet pick up is at the New Leaf Community Market in Aptos from 11:00am-4:30pm on Saturday, August 26, 2023. 161 Aptos Village Way, Aptos, CA 95003. Also available race morning. All participants must show photo ID.

Transition Area opens at 7 a.m. Parking is available at Seacliff State Beach for $10, which supports the park.

Race Day Registration opens at 6:30am

Park Entrance opens at 6am

First wave starts promptly at 8 a.m.

Duathlon Bike/Run starts at approximately 8:30 a.m. on the north side of transition area. 

Awards will be presented following the race. Racers must be present to receive awards.
